Mr. Bharat Wakhlu @ ASQ LMC Conference ITM Gurgaon

Mr. Bharat Wakhlu , Board of Director, ASQ & Group Resident Director, TATA shared his great thoughts about quality and his views on the topic " Future of Quality in India - The Leadership Dimension " in a very concise and effective way. The audiences were spellbound when Mr. Bharat started his speech telling a short motivational story of his career that had a great impact on his life and thinking -
" When he started his career , a senior leader in TATA Group has a board hanging on wall that says " turn it over to see who is the most important person in total quality " . When he turned it over and he saw the other side a mirror and he saw his own face on it "

He continued . . .
Quality is not about technology . . .
Quality is not only about standard . . .
Quality is not only about the outside world or government regulation . . .

" Quality is about what you , as an individual . . . as a leader . . . as a follower , what do you bring to the table ? " 
And we all have ( students, professionals , teachers etc. ) the power to change things & it is that power that has to be harnessed in the quest for improving quality "


He shared the 3 Main Ideas of Quality and Quality Leadership

1. Total Quality is not accidental
He summarized the whole idea in the points mentioned below
  • Vision
  • Intention to serve - Permeating from the top
  • Buy-In at all levels - Empowering all, providing resources, information and tools
  • Commitment across the organisation
  • Keep one's promise
  • Working for the long-haul
  • Setting an example by personal action'
  • Encouraging others
He concluded the 1st idea by saying " Quality is about delighting the customer ( Satisfying the customer is an old idea now "

2. Ownership and accountability at all levels
  • The buck stops here
  • Process ownership
  • Not blaming anyone
  • Understanding risks and mitigating them at all time
  • Planning , Checking and Re-Checking
  • Doing, Checking and Re-Checking
  • Acting and stimulating improvement
3. Striving for personal mastery
  • Service is SADHANA ( Spiritual exertion towards an intended goal )
  • Functional competence
  • Self-awareness
  • Self-regulation
  • Making and adhering to commitment
  • Showing persistence and initiative
  • Empathy
  • Social skills, communication , teamwork and harmony
He concluded by saying " Journey of Quality is a personal Journey "

ASQ-LMC Conference - Future of Quality in India - 'Leadership Dimension'


Today an event organised by American Society for Quality (India) Ltd. was successfully held in ITM university Gurgaon.

The theme of the conference was ' Future of Quality in India - Leadership Dimensions '.

We saw a elite bunch of eminent speakers invited in the conference and they enlightened the audience with their knowledge, experience and views related to quality. The audience included professionals from different industries, academic people and young students .

The speakers who came to the conference includes :

5. G. Sundararaman - ASQ LMC Delhi chair & Vice President - Engineering & Quality, JCB India

6. Mr. Cuby James - Founder & Director - Second school and Ex. Director Convergys

7. Mr. Sachin Garg - ASQ LMC Delhi communication chair & AVP - Quality & Business excellence, MAX Newyork Life Insurance

8. Mr. Prashant Hoskote - Director Quality & Performance excellence, MAX India

The main charm of the event was the mix of quality leaders from different sectors like Manufacturing, Service, Education & Healthcare.

To have the active participation from the audience, Panel discussion event was held with a Q & A session in the end. The panel memebers ( Mr. James, Mr. A. K. Jain & Mr. Arun Kumar ) responded very effectively to the questions put up by the audience.

A very effective live case study from Maruti supplier was also presented in the end.

Mr. Sachin gave ASQ LMC updates & also he gave presentation about the Mentor program to be started by ASQ LMC.

A new book was launched "Management Thoughts on Quality" by Mr. Aryan Viswakarma.

Overall the event was more than just the event, the views & knowledge shared by the speakers was priceless and they taught us all something new and made us realise the individual responsibility towards fulfillment of quality objectives for the delightment of customer.
